Meet Kathy Akopov, our May Volunteer of the Month! Kathy is the editor of Golden Bark and is also coordinating the production and sales of the 2009 GRRA Calendar.

In October, 2005, Kathy was seeking a golden retriever through petfinder.com and came across Jake's picture. It was love at first sight and the feeling was mutual, when she went to the Humane Society to pick him up he peed on her leg!

While at the Humane Society, she heard about GRRA. She was interested in learning more about the group right away, but didn't have enough time to start volunteering. When her schedule finally slowed down in May, 2007 she Googled GRRA and started exploring all of the different volunteer opportunities. She served as an Adoption Consultant, did Home Checks, and was the Thank You Note Coordinator for the next few months. Kathy attended the Rescue Romp in October and invited several friends to attend with her, both two-legged and four-legged. The following month, she became the editor of the newsletter and took on the role of Calendar Coordinator. The December issue was Kathy's first as editor, and she has done a fantastic job of integrating more pictures and stories of dogs while keeping all of us informed about GRRA's events.

Kathy loves the interaction with the people and dogs at GRRA. In her position, she sometimes receives 50 e-mails a day pertaining to GRRA. Through her involvement, Kathy has come to realize that a small group can make a difference. As some of you have noticed Kathy loves dog quotes, one of her favorites is, 'We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal we've ever made!'

Kathy especially enjoys adoption days, although she always tries to take one of the orphans home every month! She and Jake are in the process of obtaining their Happy Tales Pet Therapy certification, so they can go on hospital visits together.

Kathy's family always had dogs, but her first exposure to a golden retriever was her parents' golden, Atticus. Atticus' golden personality made Kathy want her very own. Jake is 7 years old and the first dog that has belonged exclusively to Kathy.

Kathy is a graduate of Kennesaw State University and works at Phillips Healthcare. On the weekends, you can find her at Eclipse di Luna, her second job. It's amazing that she finds time to be so involved in GRRA Thank you, Kathy, for all you do to keep GRRA members and friends updated on the latest GRRA events!

--Lori Kauffman, who passed away earlier this year, was a GRRA volunteer who wanted to ensure that GRRA continued to do its valuable work. Lori wanted people to know, "Dogs are not disposable. Having a dog is a lifelong commitment. They are an equal part of the family."

If you are aware of a volunteer's efforts that exemplifies what is needed to make our volunteer organization survive and thrive, please send a note to volunteer@grra.com describing who did what.  Monthly Nominations are due by the 15th of each month.
