GRRA™ ’s halfway home for retrievers celebrated its third anniversary on July 15, 2005. What began as a discussion between a couple of dedicated foster parents, has blossomed into a first-rate quarantine kennel with the help of many hard working volunteers and generous donations. As of this story, Murphyville has served hundreds of rescued retrievers.
Retrievers that come to GRRA™ from animal shelters must be quarantined for ten days to insure that they haven’t brought contagious diseases with them from the shelter. Few foster families have the ability to keep foster dogs quarantined separate from their own pets. Debbie Glover, who lives in a rural area, graciously offered to let GRRA™ construct a quarantine facility on her property and to care for the dogs while they were in quarantine. After getting advice from a variety of sources, a group of GRRA™ volunteers including Frank Conn, Becky Cross, Bertrain Comet, Debbie Glover, Eddy Wagoner, Lark O’Neal, Lisle Nolan, Joan Sample, and Sara and David Glaser began the construction of four large runs beginning with over a ton of gravel as foundation. A hot weekend in early July with temperatures over 100 degrees is hardly the ideal time for this kind of work in Georgia, but they were not to be dissuaded. A little help from some experienced Habitat for Humanity supervisors and they were soon laying concrete floors in the runs and installing electricity and plumbing.
